Did you catch the premiere of Don’t Hate Your House With The Property Brothers? If not, this is your sign to go stream the first episode ASAP! In this new series, Drew and Jonathan meet with families to help them turn their dysfunctional house into a home that they love. In the first episode, we watched one couple fight tooth and nail against a variety of unexpected obstacles—from termite damage to asbestos, footing restructuring, and more. And between a 7-year-old son and five rescue dogs in the house, it’s safe to say Jonny and Jacqueline are tight on space and low on patience.
Jonny and Jacqueline have been saving up for five years to bring this project to light, and now, they’re finally ready to take the plunge. However, right when things got started, plans had to change. During demo, they found asbestos—it derailed the budget and the timeline a bit, but ultimately, safety was the top priority and it needed to be addressed accordingly. Unfortunately, this wasn’t where the bad news ended… Their engineer discovered that the footing beneath the home was not nearly up to code, and the property’s structural integrity was at risk. They needed to open parts of the floor and install new concrete pads—leading to nearly $8,000 worth of overage, but also completely necessary.
Though discouraged, Jonny and Jacqui stayed optimistic and did what they had to do in order to make things work. With some replanning, they were able to figure out how to compromise in order to still turn their space into their dream home. After it was taken care of, they could get to work turning this cramped space into an organized open-concept living area that they could all thrive in.
Before and Afters
A Dining Room for Hosting
Ripping out the old and unused fireplace turned out to be the best thing to bring some life into their dining room, and Jonny and Jacqueline were thrilled to see it gone! The sliding doors provide a beautiful amount of natural light, and brighten up the entire first floor.
Finally, a Functional Entryway
The entryway this couple once dreaded has turned into a bright, airy, and open area where the family will feel comfortable greeting guests into the home. With space to put on your shoes, hang your coat, and a nice window to let some light in, the entryway is now a welcoming place to land.
A Kitchen That Works for Everyone
The kitchen was the dreaded zone that needed the most TLC of all the rooms on the first floor. They needed a dedicated space to make the pups’ food, and another for their family meals and lunch box prep for their son. With some creativity, a few thoughtful touches, and an expansion of their available workspace, Drew and Jonathan were able to bring this couple’s kitchen the functionality it needed.
Getting Organized In the Laundry Room
Functionality found a home in this laundry room! By better utilizing the vertical space with cabinets, counters, and even a drying rack, Jonny and Jacqui were able to fit a wash station for their pups that would end up saving them thousands on grooming.
