This week’s episode of Don’t Hate Your House kept us on our toes as Krystal and Ben navigated their 1950s home reno. This Los Angeles-native couple moved back to their old neighborhood so their 5-year-old daughter Monroe could grow up close to family, and so their three older sons could have a place to land that’s near them, as well. But after buying the property, they found themselves struggling with the laundry list of to-dos on their outdated house. That’s when they called on Drew and Jonathan to help them turn their headache into a dream home.

Everything in the house was original from 1951. Though they love the location and the view, and, of course, how close they are to their family, it needed a serious update. They had loads of asbestos, the electrical wasn’t grounded, the window seals were broken, the floors needed to be replaced, the sewage line in front of the house was completely broken—and more. Krystal and Ben were really frustrated, and for good reason! A ton of the work required was maintenance, and from there, they still had a lot to do cosmetically.

Luckily, Drew and Jonathan were there to help problem-solve and keep Krystal and Ben heading in the right direction during this major renovation project. The main areas they needed help with were the living room and kitchen. With a little creativity and a whole lot of sledgehammer magic, the Bros got to work reconfiguring this home so the family could finally rest easy. Check out how Krystal and Ben solved their reno woes on Don’t Hate Your House this week.

Chic and Modern Living

After tearing down the wall and giving the room a little facelift with more modern touches, this space took a complete 180! This front room area is now a modern, welcoming living space where Krystal and Ben can relax and host friends and family. With plenty of seating and a cozy fireplace, this room makes a chic but comfortable statement.

A Striking Kitchen Space

Opening up the space and adjusting the disorganized layout made this kitchen and dining area go from “blah” to beautiful. Modern appliances and finishes take the room out of the 50s and into the present.

A Grand Island

This striking island centers the room and makes for a fabulous space to share conversation and breakfast together in the mornings. With plenty of seating and lots of room to work around, this kitchen is a dream space for big family meals.

A Cozy Place for Meals

Krystal and Ben didn’t need a grand dining area—they just wanted a cozy gathering place for meals as a family. A round dining table calls for easy conversation, and the natural light makes the space feel that much more relaxing.

The Ultimate Chill Zone

Krystal and Ben loved the exposed beams on the ceiling, and so did we! They add warmth and intrigue to the room. Getting rid of the dingy fireplace and knocking down the wall offers a view straight from the front of the house to the back, so you’re met with a gorgeous sight of the pool upon entry.

Mixing Hues and Textures

Adding that pop of blue on the wall gives the room some life, and the textured wallpaper adds that extra bit of interest. The big cozy sectional makes for tons of plush seating, so the family can curl up together for movie night in comfort.
