When Nancy and Addam lost their rental house in the Palisades fires, they were beside themselves. It was their son, Leo’s, birthday, and their world was flipped upside down in an instant. After they got back on their feet, Nancy and Addam decided to buy their very first home together. But now, they’re struggling with how to begin again. They were left with nothing after the fires—which means they have to start from scratch with furniture, decor, and everything in between. On this episode of Property Brothers: Under Pressure, Nancy and Addam are calling on Drew and Jonathan to help them make their house a home.
Between clashing styles, a stretched-thin budget, and a rushed schedule, the renovation journey has been exhausting for their family. Above everything else, they really want to move into the house in time to host Leo’s next birthday party. “Especially after losing everything in the fires, we don’t want to keep feeling like guests where we are,” Addam says. “And so having a home where we can feel comfortable—and feel at home—is really important.”
When it comes to design, Nancy leans more contemporary, while Addam leans more traditional, and they’ve been at odds with some of their desired decor and renovation decisions. With their firm $90K reno budget, the Bros are taking steps to help optimize their funds, and get creative with ways to renovate without gouging prices—all while marrying their desired styles.
Before & Afters
Mixing Traditional and Modern
Drew and Jonathan sanded the white paint off the wooden beams and stained them a gorgeous dark wood tone to help draw the eye up and give the space contrast. They refreshed the fireplace by whitewashing the stone, regrouting, and adding a wooden mantel that calls back to the exposed wood beams.
Now, the main living area feels intentionally designed and grounded. It’s also a happy design medium, thanks to the mix of modern furniture with traditional shape and textures.
Space for Entertaining
Nancy and Addam struggled on what to do with the space between the living room and the kitchen, but ultimately, made the best design decision for their layout.
An expandable dining table is a great double-duty furniture choice, allowing them to make room for parties with loved ones without taking up precious square feet on the day-to-day. The sleek chandelier paired with the exposed dark wood beams and bountiful natural light bring the perfect pops of drama.
Rethinking the Kitchen
Nancy and Addam saved a good amount of money by keeping the kitchen in the same area. But they made it feel brand-new with fresh finishes, a clear view to the dining room, and cabinetry that better matches their styles.
Pretty Breakfast Nook
Counter-height stools, a cozy breakfast nook, and cabinetry installed on the opposite wall makes this space transform from a confusing catchall to a functional zone that provides extra storage, a dedicated purpose, and a chic style statement.
“I still can’t believe it,” Nancy says. “It’s more than I could have ever dreamt.”
