For Drew and Jonathan, helping families create their dream home is the most important part of their work. And when they met Carolina and Diego, they were reminded of that yet again. Carolina is a NICU doctor, and Diego is a producer in the entertainment space. After years living between coasts, with Diego’s work in LA and Carolina traveling back and forth from New York while she finished her residency, they’re finally ready to plant roots. This week on Property Brothers: Under Pressure, the Bros help Carolina and Diego find the dream home they’ve been wishing for.
The couple met in Argentina when they were just 19 years old, and they’ve been together ever since—but it’s been a long journey to get where they are. After moving to Los Angeles together for Diego’s job, Carolina was assigned her residency in New York, so they were back and forth between coasts for a while. Post-residency, Carolina received a fellowship opportunity in Los Angeles, and after putting in years of hard work, they were excited to settle down on one coast together. And mere months before her residency ended, she gave birth to their daughter, Gali. Everything was going to plan—and then life happened.
Gali is a happy, lively 7-year-old girl who’s also disabled. Being nonverbal and non-mobile, it’s very important to Carolina and Diego that they have enough space for Gali to be comfortable, able to move around in her wheelchair, and do daily tasks without feeling cramped. They also need the home to be in or close to West Hollywood, since it’s central to the city and offers easy access to all of Gali’s doctors and therapists.
The Bros took them to see two wonderful houses that they think could fit the bill for Carolina, Diego, and Gali. And after touring, decided to go with the second home they saw. It’s a beautiful property full of natural light, with a swimming pool perfect for Gali’s therapies, beautiful architectural details, and plenty of space to make the interior more ADA compliant. There’s even an ADU in the backyard where they can host out of town loved ones. After they officially got the home, they were ready to take the plunge and make the necessary upgrades to make it perfect for Gali.
Before & Afters
Functional Living Room
Originally, there was a step down into the main living area that would have prohibited access by wheelchair. However, Drew and Jonathan raised the floor in order to create a seamless transition from room to room for Gali, and make the overall flow into each space much more seamless.
Chic Space for Dining
Beautiful wooden accents, color-drenched walls, and statement lighting turned Diego and Carolina’s dining room into a haven for hosting. Family photos and personal touches make the space feel intimate and inviting.
Pretty Upgrades In the Kitchen
The kitchen didn’t need any major renovations other than the addition of the stove hood. However, small tweaks and simple upgrades like a new oven, upper cabinetry near the stove, and some minor decor refreshes led to a more functional, versatile space for cooking together as a family.
Serene ADA Bathroom for Gali
They installed a large, zero clearance shower with two hinged doors to make bathing easy and accessible for Gali, along with a pocket door to provide a smart space-saving solution. Gorgeous hand-laid terracotta tile speaks to the Old World charm that’s seen throughout the home, making the bathroom both functional and beautiful.
