Michael and Yuni have been in a long-distance relationship, but they’re ready to finally find a home together in California. The two met in grad school around 11 years ago—they dated for a while, broke up for a six-year period, and ended up reconnecting about a year ago with the discovery that they had grown closer than ever. While Yuni has lived in Denver, Colorado, Michael has been living in Los Angeles, California—but they want to bridge the gap and move in together. However, they want Drew and Jonathan’s help to make the best decisions on this big investment, and the renovations that’ll come along with it. On this episode of Property Brothers: Under Pressure, the Bros help Michael and Yuni find a place they can call home.
They have a pretty tight budget for a single-family home in the LA area—around $700k, plus $35k for renovations—and they need Drew and Jonathan’s help to find a place that won’t break the bank. They’re looking for a spot with charm and character, and would like at least two bedrooms. Both Michael and Yuni, and Drew and Jonathan all found a home that they thought would fit what they were going for, and in the end, they went with Michael and Yuni’s first choice. It needed some serious work in the kitchen, but there was a ton of space to work with, and they loved all the traditional custom built-ins and original details that gave the property so much character. Now, all they had to do was get to work on the renovations!
Before & Afters
Classic Shaker Cabinets
With Michael and Yuni’s strict renovation budget (and considering the money that had to go into getting rid of lead paint, leveling the floors, and more), Drew thought it’d be a good idea to save where they could when it came to new features. Enter: Habitat for Humnity ReStore! They were able to find pre-fab shaker cabinets that gave that classic look to their new kitchen without overspending.
Integrating the Dining Space
When the abatement team found that the panel on the back of the dining room built-in was completely covered in lead paint, the Bros were upset about having to break the news to the couple. After consulting Michael and Yuni, they decided it would be best to make lemonade out of lemons and remove the rest of the built in, and keep the space open as a breakfast bar to connect the kitchen and the dining space together. Now, hosting friends and family and serving dinner parties will feel more seamless.
Cozy Living
Michael and Yuni wanted the home to remain Craftsman, while still infusing some modern comforts. They kept the beautiful trim throughout the space and the wooden beams on the ceilings to honor the original details. Then, in the living room, they cozied it up with personal photos, a big sofa, and plants that help breathe new life inside.
Upgrading the Half Bath
The half bath was pretty much a blank slate when they bought the home, so they decided to have some fun with wallpaper, a handrail that mimics the first floor’s original trimwork, and wooden accents that complement the rest of the decor.
Now, the first floor feels complete and the home is ready for them to grow into together.
