It’s no surprise that James and Crystal want to stay in their charming single-story home rather than moving: In the 17 years they’ve lived there, they’ve raised 30 kids and made countless memories. But in order to function for this special family, the house needed a lot more space, style, and storage. With the couple’s approval, we created a stunning new kitchen, a dining space for 12, and two separate entertaining areas. And throughout the home, we made sure to incorporate kid-friendly decor, like a graphic rug in the living room to hide potential stains and custom shelving for toys and picture frames. DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
GOING TO GRAY LENGTHS
We extended the kitchen about four feet to add more countertop space and make the overall space larger. When it came time to choose design materials, we opted for a softer palette: a durable white quartz countertop with a dramatic finish—up close, it almost sparkles!—and a white and gray textured marble backsplash. To bring the farmhouse feel to life, we installed an apron sink, seen above, and a pot filler over the stove.
LET IT SLIDE
One of the two entertaining areas pulls double-duty, serving as both a place to gather and watch movies (meaning plenty of seating, blackout shades, and an entertainment system) as well as a guest room with a sleeper bed. Dividing the two spaces is this custom sliding barn door, which when shut will allow James and Crystal’s overnight visitors to have complete privacy—in style.
BUILT TO FILL
With ten-plus occupants, this home naturally contains a lot of stuff. We added two custom built-ins in the media room, with both shelving (to display books and mementos) and cupboards (to tuck other items out of sight). On the perpendicular wall, we brought in an oversize media hutch with shelves and doors for bonus storage space. And we couldn’t resist transforming the existing fireplace into a focal point with some shiplap, accent lighting, and a custom wood mantel.
