With three kids, three dogs, and a towering five-bedroom home, Troy and Susan have a lot going on—and a lot going wrong, design-wise. They tasked us with a renovation focusing on the main floor, which includes the kitchen, family room, mudroom, and play area. Our first order of business was raising the sunken family room floor and replacing all of the dated tile flooring with an easy-to-clean vinyl in a wood-look plank. And since Troy and Susan plan to open their doors to friends, neighbors, and other visitors, we made sure to incorporate plenty of storage, seating, and kid-friendly features.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
HIDDEN HANGOUT
Troy and Susan’s dogs had chewed through the bottom of a wall in the kitchen, and during the reno that hole was revealed to be a large open space underneath the stairs. We thought it would be fun to surprise the family by turning this newfound nook into a sweet retreat for the kids. We opened up the empty wall closest to the double ovens to create this hideaway complete with a miniature desk and serving window. To decorate, we added a playful peel-and-stick wallpaper, installed floating shelves to display books and toys, and hung some pretty sensational artwork.
HIGH FIVE!
The kitchen had two smaller islands that were long, narrow and didn’t really function for this family of five—it kind of felt like walking down a supermarket aisle. Troy and Susan wanted one large seating situation that could comfortably fit everyone at any given time, so we removed both of the existing islands and created this semi-circle feature with a breakfast bar. Finally, we replaced the existing countertops with a light, easy-to-clean, natural-looking porcelain stone.
DOUBLE-DUTY DIGS
Troy and Susan wanted the existing playroom to also function as a guest bedroom, so we brought in a queen-size daybed with a pull-out trundle that serves as a couch for the kids and can comfortably sleep three or four people. Since the space will be used mostly by the little ones, we decorated it with whimsical accessories, custom display boards for their artwork, and a fun blue accent wall behind the daybed. Redoing the flooring here was not in the original budget, so we layered a white area rug over the existing carpet to add texture and brighten up the room.
