Allison Janney Gifts A Showstopper

Academy Award-winning actress Allison Janney asked us to help Ilana, her assistant and friend of 20 years, have a new space for her family to enjoy. We took one look and knew what had to be done: flip the kitchen and dining room to create a stunning family island, an intimate space for meals and a wine cabinet to die for.

Before & After

To update Ilana’s living room fireplace, we first needed to remove the dated stone façade, which revealed the original brick—and, thankfully, a fireplace that was in pretty good shape. We installed a hearth and mantle using the same sintered stone as in the kitchen, but with a honed finish so the looks were complementary (not too matchy-matchy). Add a new gas burner, and we had an old feature made new again—our favorite kind of project.

Allison led us down the right path for the kitchen design: white, shaker style cabinets with the blue accents Ilana would be looking for … and, as it turns out, what Allison would be looking for, since her kitchen island is blue, too! (She did, at least, pick a different shade of blue.)

We wanted somewhere to show off Ilana’s wine collection, and boy, did we figure out how to put it front and center! Her custom wine cabinet is both an exceptional conversation piece and a practical storage solution, using an otherwise dead end of the wall between the dining room and the entryway.
