Jump to a section

Actress Zooey Deschanel’s best friend from childhood, Sarah, has just had her second child and is going back to school to be a therapist. Her 900-square-foot home is a tight fit for the family, so we opened the main living space and kitchen to use every square inch efficiently.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
A NOOK FOR ALL MEALTIMES

Sarah’s dining room space was outdated and took up valuable real estate she needed for the rest of the house. We went with the best space-saver out there: a corner banquette with storage underneath, so the kids can store their after-dinner toys. Plus, Zooey specially designed the light fixture just for Sarah, so she has a one-of-a-kind piece from her best friend.

TRADING A WALL FOR A WATERFALL

Our biggest demo piece was the wall in the middle of the house, which previously separated the kitchen from the living space. We flipped the layout, putting the range and lots of cabinetry against the back wall so Sarah could have this gorgeous island with waterfall counters and a built-in sink. Plus, we hid the washer-dryer stack out of view in even more storage alongside the fridge.

A WARM WELCOME

There’s no grand entryway to Sarah’s house: once you’re in the front door, you’re right in the living room! We turned that quirk into a feature by opening the main floor and reorienting the living room seating toward the natural light. Now, guests won’t want to wait to jump right into the inviting living room—and they won’t have to!
