Tamara bought a home in her childhood neighborhood nearly two years ago, so her two teenagers could enjoy being close to Tamara’s parents and the ample park next door. As it turned out, the kids were over at Grandma and Grandpa’s house all the time, because Tamara’s house couldn’t accommodate their friends in a fun, easy way. In order to make her house the new hangout spot, we needed to get Tamara’s home feeling fresh and airy from the moment you walked in the door, all the way to the backyard deck.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
BUILT-INS DESIGNED TO SHOW OFF
Tamara’s glass-blowing skills are pretty incredible, and we wanted a place for her to show off her artwork the way it deserved. Our built-in shelving and banquettes did just the trick, providing a lot of needed storage and seating without costing a lot of space. Imagine how amazed we were when Tamara and Maddy revealed their incredible oversized paintings! Now, this talented family has a stunning display area for their gallery-worthy pieces.
MAKING SPACE FOR A GRAND ENTRANCE
Tamara’s house was great for the basics, but narrow walkways made the house feel small during events. We opened the main entrance to the living room to present the whole house to guests. A seating area will encourage the kids to spend time reading in the natural light coming through the front window, which we styled to add drama and contrast.
A SMALLER ISLAND, BUT MORE FUN IN THE SUN
We initially had planned on giving Tamara and Maddy a large island as part of their kitchen renovation, but when we opened up the center wall in the living room, we found that everything in the house ran through it: utilities, vents, you name it. So, we reduced the size of the wall, but we also reduced the size of the island and created a custom countertop that maximized space without sacrificing function. The island still looks and works great, and as a bonus, we helped spruce up their outdoor deck right off the kitchen for additional entertaining and gathering space.
