Debbie is a retired Air Force nurse who moved into a quiet suburban home with her four kids 17 years ago. Three of the four kids have since moved out, so it’s just Debbie and her youngest daughter Christina, who both love their home but really need an upgrade. We completely overhauled the kitchen, dining room, living room and Christina’s bedroom to create a fresh, beautiful family home that will be loved for years to come.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
MIX AND MATCH DINING ROOM
Debbie said she was opening to large lighting fixtures, so we took her at her word and installed a massive feature over her dining room table and chairs—well, chairs and bench. We figured that, with a large extended family, Debbie and Christina could use the extra seating a vintage bench would provide. Combined with the natural tones of the table and the nearby torched mantle, this velvet beauty perfectly balances the modern upgrades, with a subtle nod to the home’s past.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF WATERBED
Christina mentioned in the inspiration our how much she liked a beach theme, which referred both to the color palette of her bedroom and the ocean photos she has taken over the years. We found a wall-length mural similar to her photography to install behind her bed, which we styled with a sea-green area rug and muted pastels. Now she can float away to sleep every night in her relaxing ocean hideaway.
DEFYING THE LAWS OF SCIENCE
You know what’s amazing? Finding free space! We found tons of space above the dropped kitchen ceiling as we started our demo, which meant we could stack cabinets all along the new kitchen walls. That way, Debbie can store items she might only use a few times a year, freeing up more accessible space for Christina’s baking pans. Somebody alert the scientists: we turned empty space into brownies!
