Oh, did you think Jonathan only had one tool bag? Well, you’d be mistaken. He actually has several! But as a contractor, having plenty of tool kits laying around is to be expected. You never know what you might need when you’re on a job site. He’s not the only one who should have a reliable set of tools, though. It doesn’t matter if you’re a renter, a new homeowner, or a contractor yourself—everyone needs, at the very least, the right basic tools to get everyday home projects done. With so many tools under his belt (we had to), Jonathan Scott knows the best of the best tools and supplies that you’ll actually need in your own home tool kit for projects and everyday fixes.
“You guys will be like, ‘He’s a junk collector! Why does he have all this crap in his bag?’ And I’m like, ‘Guys, I do a lot of work,'” he jokes in the latest Ask Your Brother YouTube video above. But it’s true! Jonathan has been doing this for a long time. “Just for our shows, we’ve done almost 650 projects—just for the shows. Before that, we had done hundreds of projects. So we’re probably just over 1,000 projects in my career that I’ve done,” Jonathan says. “You need the tools.”
So to help you curate your very own tool kit for your home projects, he’s walking us through his favorite tools, and the ones he recommends for every household. That way, you always have what you need at the ready—be it a loose doorknob, a picture frame that needs to be hung, or the many other everyday happenings you can’t predict.
Jonathan’s Must-Have Home Tool Kit
If there’s one person to take advice from when it comes to tools you need around the house, it’s Jonathan! These are the must-have pieces he says you need in your home tool kit:
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Current tester
- Allen keys
- Staple gun
- Hammer
- Scissors
- Stud finder
- Gas detector
Don’t Forget Essential Battery Tools
In the video, Jonathan also shows us his bag of battery tools he keeps on deck. “This is what I have in my car; this is what I have in my garage, just for whatever project around the house,” he says. These are important for projects that you need some more power behind—like drilling into a wall; cutting pieces of wood or drywall; and more DIY home projects.
A bag of handy lithium battery tools is an easy, practical way to keep a collection of tools on-hand (even in one bag!) without them taking up a ton of space in your home. His all-in-one tool kit is a great pick—linked below—that you can buy for your own home. Every tool shares a lithium ion battery, so you don’t have to worry about a bunch of different cords and battery packs.

Jonathan’s Extensive Tool Kit Supplies
When Jonathan talks through what’s in his miscellaneous bag of tools, we could tell he wasn’t kidding when he said he had a ton of stuff! From clamps and channel locks to forearm lifting straps and every kind of tape you could imagine, booties, an adjustable drill attachment, and more—we were shocked at how much that tool bag could even fit!
What’s in Jonathan’s Tool Belt?
“If you’ve ever seen me on the show, this is the belt that I have been wearing for 14 years; 15 years—I actually have several of them depending on where I’m working and what I’m doing, but they’re all exactly the same,” Jonathan says.
On his tool belt, Jonathan needs a lot of things to get his job done. This includes:
- Small level
- Square
- Pencils
- Adjustable wrench
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Utility knife
- Tape measure
- Flashlight
- Safety glasses and work gloves
- Current tester
- Wire snippers
- Needle nose pliers
Whew! That’s a ton of stuff to be carrying around on a site, but it’s all necessary for him to get the job done right, and to get it done efficiently.
His Advice for Curating Your Home Tool Kit
“In my world, every second matters—there’s so much happening, so many projects—it’s better to have what I need handy. For you at home, if you’ve got the safety gear, you’ve got the basics; the essentials… I think you’ll be good to go,” Jonathan says. “The nice thing is, you can buy a tool bag that comes with all the tools that you’ll need in it, and then just add a few extra things if they don’t have them. Good luck!”
