It’s easy to get stuck in the same old routine and not realize when you need to change things up. Mattress shopping can be a daunting task that leaves you overwhelmed and wondering if you can tough it out another year. But don’t give up! Here are five easy steps for how to choose a mattress that will make shopping for the right mattress a breeze.

1. Know the Best Time to Buy a Mattress

Since a mattress is a big investment, if you can purchase one during a sale, you can save a pretty penny. Holidays like Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July are popular times to discount mattresses, but also consider looking for discontinued models, as they can pop up any time of the year.

2. Decide Your Budget

Even when you can take advantage of a great discount, learning how much a mattress costs can be tricky. Depending on the brand, prices can vary wildly, so it’s better to go in with a set with a solid idea of how much you’re willing to spend.

3. Figure Out What You Like

Figuring out how firm or soft you want your mattress to be is sometimes harder than it may appear. Although, both conformability and support are important qualities for minimizing back pain, in general, a softer mattress will prioritize conformability while a firmer mattress will lean more towards providing support. Be prepared to test a variety of mattresses so you can find the happy medium that works best for you.

4. Determine The Size

A common struggle couples face is finding the right mattress that lets them feel close together without crowding them. A simple way to check if the mattress you’re looking at can accommodate both you and your partner is to lie beside them with your hands under your head and your elbows pointing out. If your elbows barely graze each other or don’t touch at all, you’re on the right size mattress.

5. Consider All Your Options Before Committing

When you find a mattress that meets all your criteria, it can be easy to get swept up in excitement and want to take it home right away.  But don’t be afraid to ask sales reps about similar mattresses in the same price range or to do your own research online. Sometimes you can find an even better fit or deal if you take the time to look.
