Naima and Edo inherited a home from Naima’s grandmother, and they’ve been raising their two children there. However, the space just isn’t working anymore. The kids are growing, but the home isn’t growing with them. Between a shared bedroom for the children, a totally dysfunctional kitchen layout, and a wonky runaround to get to the backyard, the couple is struggling to decide what’s best for their family. Do they make it work, or do they move on? Naima and Edo call on the help of Drew and Jonathan to help them make an informed decision that’s best for them and their future on this episode of Property Brothers: Under Pressure.

“There’s nothing worse than when you feel your home doesn’t work for you and your family, and you’re desperate for change,” Drew says. Naima and Edo’s children are currently sharing a room, but as their daughter Ella enters her pre-teen years and their son Evan is more rambunctious than ever, the kids are getting more and more annoyed with each other—and their parents know that this setup is not working anymore.

On top of their home struggles, Naima is also going through treatment for stage 3 breast cancer—something they discovered just after applying for the show. Naima says that she wants to surprise her kids with a new home or a layout that makes everyone happy. “I know they’re worried about me,” she says. “I just also want to show the kids that we can do hard things together.”

After looking at two other homes and going back and forth about pros, cons, and where their heart was at, Naima and Edo decided to renovate instead of moving. And so, they got to work transforming their house into the space they always hoped it could be.

Before & Afters
Cozy Spot for Lounging

Naima and Edo wanted to transform the living room into a comfortable area for entertainment, hosting, and lounging as a family on movie night. A new entertainment unit anchors the space, while cozy furniture and a soft rug plays better into their preferred palette of blues and greens. Plus, they turned the previously unusable single-pane window into a beautiful door that leads out into the backyard.

Fabulously Functional Kitchen

The kitchen hadn’t been touched since the ’60s, and Naima and Edo were ready to completely demo the space and turn it into a place they’d actually want to cook and host in.

Knocking down the wall and taking out the door separating the kitchen and dining rooms made the whole flow change for the better. Thanks to upgraded appliances, new countertops, and fresh cabinetry, the kitchen finally works for them.

Dining in Style

Pulling in new dining room furniture made the home flow better, while a chic pendant light and floor-to-ceiling curtains frame the room and help it feel cohesive.

Opening up the wall into the kitchen and removing the unused fireplace created better sight lines and flow throughout the entire space—from the living room to the kitchen and beyond.

Evan’s New Digs

They originally had a den with an additional TV, but they weren’t using it as much as their main living room. So they decided to reconfigure it into Evan’s new room, instead. An outer space theme with navy blues, stars, and of course, a plush new bed, now make Evan’s room out of this world.

Ella’s Dreamy Haven

So long, bunk beds! Ella finally has her peaceful sanctuary, with pretty pastels, whimsical accents, and an ultra-comfy spot for reading her books.

A brand-new bed, coat of paint, and fresh accents that speak to Ella’s personality turned the previously aggravating space into a cozy haven that’s all her own.
