1. First Impressions Matter
You (and your guests’) first impression of your home truly does matter—it sets the stage for the ambiance of your entire house! So in order to keep things calm, an organized entryway is a must. “When you first walk into a space, your first impression should be one of calm, tasteful placement of everything the eye can see,” Jonathan says.
2. Buy the Right Baskets
Not all baskets are made equally. What you store, how you store it, and where it’s placed all matter. For example, instead of setting out wire or acrylic baskets on a console or coffee table that let the chaos shine through, buy baskets that have solid sides to better hide the clutter. Save those for inside cabinets or drawers where you need to see things at a glance.
“I do not like using acrylic containers as decor,” Jonathan says. “It just looks cheap.”
“Put them inside a cabinet for kids’ stuff, and it can be really great because you can see what you need,” Drew adds. “But I wouldn’t have them out on the shelf where you can see it.”
For your blankets and cozy linens, avoid rough, woven baskets that can snag and pull—and instead, opt for smoother ones that won’t damage your fabrics. It all comes down to understanding the need of what you’re stashing and knowing how its container will be displayed.
3. Opt for Closed Storage
From your office supplies and desk papers to your playroom toys and your jewelry collection, closed storage will always help eliminate your visual clutter. And that goes a long way in helping your home look and feel more organized.
In the office, opt for file cabinets or containers that keep documents tucked away, rather than keeping them scattered on top of your desk; in the playroom, go for storage that helps contain the clutter and makes it easy for little ones to put things back; for your jewelry collection, consider jewelry boxes with multiple shelves and drawers to protect your precious pieces. It’s the small messes like this that, once tucked out of sight and into an organized place, truly make a difference in how well your space functions for the whole family.
