Garret, Malia, and their two boys are looking for their forever home. Malia grew up in Hawaii, while Garret grew up in Colorado, but they’ve been living in the South Bay region of California ever since the two met in 2014. They purchased a home in Lawndale, and though they had plenty of space with their first son, as soon as the second came along, they knew they were going to have to make a move. Malia and Garret sold their home quickly, but buying has been another story. They’ve been renting for some months now with no luck, and Malia and Garret are hoping that with Drew and Jonathan’s help, they can finally find a home they can grow into on this week’s episode of Property Brothers: Under Pressure.
Malia and Garret both work from home, so they’d love a 4-bedroom house to be able to have enough room to spread out. They also really want to stay in Redondo Beach, since the schools are top-notch and the scenery is beautiful. However, with their $1.7M budget and the ultra-competitive South Bay market, they’ve got their work cut out for them. They were in the middle of a tour at a home they fell in love with when Drew received a call from the seller’s agent saying the property was just sold; and at another showing, the house left little to be desired.
Malia and Garret felt defeated… That is, until Drew spotted a house that wasn’t even on the market yet—right across the street from the listing they loved, in their dream neighborhood. They put in an offer, and finally, they got it! Now that the hard part was over, the hard work had to start: renovating.
Before & Afters
Spacious Living Room With Plenty of Storage
Malia and Garret wanted the home to look beautiful, of course, but even more important for them was function. With two little boys running around, they have their hands full (and their house full) with all their toys and more. So, storage was a must. By removing the fireplace, not only did the layout make more sense, but the available storage space went up a notch, too.
They also opened up the entryway to give the dramatic split-level a more seamless transition into the living room. They took out the rail and rearranged the landing area to accommodate one sleek step down into the living space, which helped it feel much more inviting.
Bright and Beautiful Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and it certainly will be for Malia and Garret! The Bros took the kitchen from wonky, cramped, and dysfunctional to totally streamlined and ready for family cooking. By removing the peninsula and knocking down the wall separating the kitchen and living room, everything changed. They expanded the counter space with a breakfast bar, added in new cabinetry, and rearranged the layout to give Malia and Garret a kitchen ready for everyday life with the kids.
Cozy Dining Nook Perfect for Family Dinner
Tucking a cozy banquette into the corner of the kitchen and dining area gave Malia and Garret so much more storage opportunities. They installed a tall pantry cabinet with plenty of space to house clutter and cooking musts, and keep items tucked away and out of sight. It made the room feel more complete and cohesive, and less like an empty, poorly utilized space.
