Mark & Dave

Mark and Dave had big dreams of a mid-century home with an open layout and ample room for entertaining. We found them a fabulous 1,700 square-foot ranch built in 1961 (by the same architect who built one of Liz Taylor’s homes, no less!) that they were willing to take a chance on. Our plans included removing a fourth bedroom to make way for a dining room off the kitchen, updating the original fireplace, and making sure both owners have space to call their own without sacrificing room for houseguests. While the renovation didn’t go exactly as planned, we ended up with a bright and fun space that checks all their boxes.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
TREASURE ISLAND

Mark and Dave are big on entertaining, which means the kitchen simply must be part of the action. This over-sized island provides plenty of extra counter space for prepping food and mixing drinks, and the sleek, yellow stools pull color from the dining room and front door into the room. Plenty of drawers and a built-in microwave mean this centerpiece isn’t just fashionable—it’s functional, too!

LIGHT MY FIRE

The fireplace is one of the first things you see upon entering the house, so it was important to make it feel less mid-century meh and more mid-century meow (Drew’s words). A fresh coat of paint helped modernize the classic structure while keeping the original stone detail, while a runway made of white tiles draws-in the eye from the doorway.

A PLACE TO CALL HER OWN

Last but not least: Margo’s room. Mark’s drag persona Margo is busy booking shows and working the stage, and at the end of the day, she really just needs a place to hang her wig. Her new dressing room is fit for a star: it has plenty of closet space, versatile lighting, and custom-designed pegs to hold her wigs. And see that gorgeous green couch? It actually pulls out into a bed, just in case Margo—or one of the guys—has a guest stay over.
