Comedian Howie Mandel loves to pull pranks, and we were down to pull off the ultimate ruse—a surprise home makeover for Rich, his best friend and road manager of 30 years. Rich had lived in his bachelor pad condo, complete with beer can wall and bottlecap table, for 15 years. Howie wanted to transform the space into a stylish home where his friend could entertain and relax. Together, we reimagined the main floor to create a space with ambiance and sleek, contemporary finishes.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
HOME IS WHERE THE HEARTH IS
Rich is the type of guy who appreciates a warm fire, so we really wanted to make sure we got him a proper gas fireplace. Considering the condo’s unusual venting, we thought we might have to settle for an electrical unit, but at the last minute, we found this beautiful L-shaped hearth. It slots into the corner of the room comfortably but can be appreciated from any angle.
APPLIANCE POWER
We know galley kitchens are a thing, but Rich’s kitchen was so narrow, we could barely stretch out an arm without hitting something. Taking down a wall and replacing the window with cabinets helped open things up, but what proved to be a game changer was the appliance garage we installed. Individual appliances like toasters and coffee machines can now be stored and pulled out easily, reducing the amount of counter space used.
GRADUATING WITH STYLE
Because Rich and Howie are on the road so often, Rich never really got the chance to settle into his bedroom. So, we transformed the plain, dorm-like bachelor pad into a modern and mature space that reflected his style in a more adult manner.
