Dana and Terry weren’t looking for a new house because theirs was a lost cause—they just needed more space for their growing family. (Current head count: six.) Their place had tons of square footage to work with; all we had to do was reconfigure it. So we said goodbye to the cave-like kitchen, in part by moving the door to another wall and relocating the windows. This was an admittedly expensive step, but it allowed us to extend the lower cabinets, add much-needed counter space—and up the value of the home.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY

This black steel window feature is straight from a New York City loft. (Doesn’t it look like the “real” window in Monica’s apartment on “Friends”?). It provides more than just sightlines between the kitchen and living space—because there are no glass panes, you can hear and smell everything too. And it’s visible from the front door, so you know immediately upon entering that this is an elevated space.

ON THE DOUBLE

We knew buyers would freak out over this fully custom kitchen, now with double the storage and prep space. From the appliances to the protective flooring, everything here is highly functional—except for a faux panel at the bottom of these cabinets. That’s there to give the illusion of a full pantry, shhh.

FOCAL FIREPLACE

While the window feature is eye-catching, it’s the fireplace that sets the tone for the whole place. The simple setup—it’s a gas insert with a clean three-tier surround—provides a focal point and instant warmth that previously didn’t exist.
