And we thought couples with different design preferences were tricky! On this week’s episode, Ryan was all for an ambitious nine-week renovation while Allison was opposed to the idea of this teal fixer-upper. Luckily, we were able to show them both that customizing a home, no matter the scope of the job, was better than purchasing an expensive turnkey property. We made major changes that left this place nearly unrecognizable, like moving the kitchen away from the front of the house, vaulting the ceiling, and constructing a new garage and two-tier deck out back. All that plus a more subdued exterior color totally won Allison over—and our carefully chosen design details throughout sealed the deal.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
SETTING THE STAGE
Per Allison’s request, we added a dramatic first impression to the home with a high-contrast black-and-white wallpaper. Look closely: The gold accents in the wallpaper add a bit of softness to the space and complement the nearby decor.
GRAY MATTERS
We put tons of thought into Allison and Ryan’s kitchen, from the vaulted ceiling to the hardwood floors. The black and white cabinets were selected to speak to the masculine feel of the space, while the marble mosaic backsplash adds just the right amount of elegance. The result is a super-cohesive, super-stylish kitchen.
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
We kept Allison and Ryan’s existing dining table and played up its natural, earthy aesthetic with equally organic elements. That meant adding a pop of color with deep green chairs, installing a farmhouse-chic light fixture overhead, and staging the area with fresh fruit and greenery. On the walls, nature-inspired artwork both grounds and defines the space. All these little touches and textures fuse together to make a big impact.
