So, When Do Kids Go Back to School?
According to Pew Research Center, “back to school” can mean anytime from late July to after Labor Day, depending on where in the United States you live. Let’s break it down by region!
In the Northeast
- New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut): School typically starts around the week of August 24.
- Middle Atlantic states (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania): About 75% of students start after Labor Day, which falls on September 7 in 2026.
In the South
- South Atlantic (Delaware, Maryland, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida): Most schools in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina start in early to mid-August. In Delaware, Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia, schools usually begin mid- to late August, with some starting after Labor Day.
- East South Central (Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama): Most schools start the first or second week of August.
- West South Central (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas): The majority of school districts start between August 10 and August 17.
In the Midwest
- West North Central (North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri): Schools generally start between mid-August and late August.

When does summer end?
As much fun as back-to-school season is, it does unfortunately mean that summer is ending. While some people consider Labor Day (September 7, 2026) the final day of the season, the more official last day of summer is September 22, 2026. But no need to be sad! That’s the same day as the autumn equinox, which means you can finally start decorating for fall. (If you haven’t already…) Plus, Daylight Saving Time doesn’t go into effect until November 1, 2026, so it’ll still be a bit before you need to break out your coziest blankets.
