Mary Makes a Move to Step Into Her Next Chapter

Mary moved to Los Angeles when she started out her career as a runway model in the ’80s, but she was always back and forth to Northern California to visit her family. When her mom got sick, however, Mary decided to live in San Jose permanently to help take care of her. After her mom passed in 2018, Mary hit a rough spell—she needed time to heal. But now, she’s ready to relocate back to Los Angeles. She’s nervous and uncertain about where to go and what to buy, but she’s confident that with Drew and Jonathan’s help, she’ll find a place to finally call home. This week on Property Brothers: Under Pressure, Mary and the Bros head out on a search to find her dream space for her next chapter.

The bad news? She only has one day to figure it out. Mary is flying out to Los Angeles with her sweet pup Ella to meet the Bros, and she has a mere 24 hours in the city before she has to head back to San Jose and start packing for the long journey ahead. So, Drew and Jonathan got to work lining up some showings. In the end, they only ended up touring two places: A condo near Griffith Park with beautiful views and the proximity to downtown she’s looking for; and a house in the Valley on a tree-lined street and a yard for Ella that ended up instantly winning her over.

Drew and Jonathan encouraged her to think about the decision, and offered to take her to see the final condo showing they had lined up, but Mary’s mind was made: The Valley home was the one. After putting in an offer on the house, she got it—for under asking, too! Now, all they had to do was get to work renovating.

Mary makes kitchen and cooking video content, so it was super important for her space to look great for the camera. One of Mary’s favorite movies is Something’s Gotta Give, and she loves the Nancy Meyers aesthetic. So, Drew and Jonathan actually contacted the film’s production designer, Jon Hutman, to get his advice on how to bring it to life in Mary’s space. Mixed metal hardware, a couple dark accent pieces, pretty blue tile, and a scallop rug now give it a movie-ready finish.

Layered Details in the Dining Room

That dreamy coastal vibe extends into the dining room, with pretty striped dining chairs, a serene blue accent wall, and a cream, white-washed dining table. Details like the applied molding on the walls make the space feel lived-in and interesting. 

Cozy, Coastal, and Calm

Light touches of cream, blue, and natural fibers throughout make the living space one that Mary and Ella will be able to truly relax in. They also mirrored the applied molding from the dining room in the living room accent wall to bring the space together cohesively. Now, Mary is ready to start her next chapter inside a home that feels like her.
