After dropping everything to take care of a family member, Jana and Larry were finally ready to sort out their living situation—and to give their son, Noah, his own special space. The couple found their answer in a property they’d started to renovate two years ago but never completed (and desperately wanted to abandon!). While most of the demo was already done, the actual renovation was extensive. We built out a giant island in the kitchen, installed a stunning glass railing leading upstairs, and carved out an entertaining space that guests will never want to leave.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
SPACE BARS
To separate the glass staircase from the kitchen, we created a unique screen feature with wood slats. The soft gray color complements the neutral tones throughout the main floor—and prevents this thing from looking like fancy a jail cell.
IT’S A FRAMER
Behind the new range, we installed a herringbone tile backsplash and a picture-frame feature with contrasting tile shapes inside. It all blends together for a showstopping kitchen wall, with the recessed lights above acting like spotlights.
MONKEYING AROUND
We were given one instruction for little Noah’s room—“Make it fun!”—and we went all out. The real MVP is this hand-painted tree that sprawls up the walls and onto the ceiling. (We’ve actually worked with Toronto’s Hand Painted Murals before, including on a far-out space-themed kid’s room in Season 4.) This is the only place on earth where dinosaurs and monkeys peacefully coexist.
