Jonathan’s Newest Project Revealed: Renovating an LA Apartment Building

Jonathan and Zooey loved building The Park House, their beautiful Los Angeles home complete with a solarium, a craft room for Zooey, and plenty of unique touches. They were itching to work on another project together, and now it’s finally finished! But it’s not just a room or a guest suite for Mom and Dad. No—they took on the challenge of renovating an entire apartment building, complete with state-of-the-art security systems, home appliances, beautiful finishes, and more. Come check it out!

In his latest House Tours video on YouTube, Jonathan is walking us through exactly how he and Zooey transformed an outdated California apartment complex into a chic and modern new space for residents to enjoy. And let’s just say, it needed far more than a new coat of paint. So they took the opportunity to not only spruce it up, but really improve the function of the apartments, as well.

When they bought the building, they surveyed all the tenants to determine their main concerns and problem areas. Residents said there were three main things that needed attention: security, building access, and noise transfer. With this in mind, Jonathan made it his mission to make sure folks could finally have a space that they felt good about living in. “Nothing is going to feel like an ‘apartment,’” he says, “Everything is going to feel like a home.” Here’s how he made it happen.

Problem Areas & Jonathan’s Solutions

Building Access

Jonathan installed a brand-new building access system called ButterflyMX that makes letting in guests easy and simple. You can access video right from your phone, talk directly to them, and let them in with the touch of a button. Not only does this help make building access seamless and accessible, but it also offers a sleek and sophisticated first impression.

Cosmetics

Here’s where the magic happened! New paint, beautiful and thoughtful finishes, window treatments, modern appliances—he thought of it all. In the kitchen, he replaced the outdated tile countertops with beautiful porcelain slabs and modern brass finishes. Throughout each room, he also added new light fixtures from their Drew & Jonathan collection at Visual Comfort & Co. for the perfect ambiance in every living space.

Appliances

Prior to Jonathan and Zooey’s renovations, everyone had to haul their laundry to a central laundry room outside of their unit (which made laundry day even more of a pain!). For added convenience, they thought it’d be a perfect opportunity to install a laundry system into the individual units. With limited space available, they opted for the perfect solution: a high-tech combination washer/dryer from GE Profile. With its large wash capacity and ventless drying system, it’s the Goldilocks appliance they were searching for in this space.

Security

They also replaced the old-school lock and key system with a digital access lock for each resident’s unit. With one code, you, your partner, your dog-walker, or your friends staying in from out of town can have easy access to your unit—and if for any reason you need to change your code, that’s simple to do as well.

Noise Transfer

Prior to the renovations, the walls were paper-thin, and noise transfer between units was a big issue. Jonathan made sound-proofing each space simple and effective with the use of white oak wall paneling covers from WVH, which help dampen sound and reduce echo in the room for a more peaceful environment. With the addition of acoustic barrier soundproofing underneath the wood wall paneling, neighbors can finally rest easy with less sound transfer between units.
