- How much of the wall would you like to be filled by the artwork? On empty walls, the width of your large wall art piece should cover 65% – 75% of your wall. You can use a simple calculation to get your ideal artwork dimensions:
- Wall Width x 0.65 (or 0.75) = Art width range
- Wall Height x 0.65 = Art height limit (Aim for the center of your art to be about 58 inches from the floor, which is standard for art galleries.)
- Is there furniture you have to measure around? If you’re planning to hang the piece in the space above a couch or bed, for example, you should take this into consideration for your final dimensions. Most experts recommend that the art covers 3/4 of the width of the piece of furniture it is hanging above.
- What kind of statement you want to make? Large artwork will naturally draw the eye as soon as you enter a room. A landscape oil painting might be more subtle and calming, while a bright abstract painting brings an energetic pop to the space.
- How will the artwork will blend with the rest of your decor? Think about the color, texture, and tone you already have in your space, and try to find art that complements the vibe.
