Family is everything to professional musician Josefina, and her L.A. home is the heart of her large extended Chilean family. She loves having a space for her family to come together, but the cramped, disjointed flow and uneven floors on the main level was making it hard for Josefina and her family to move around in, especially for sister Sofia, who uses a wheelchair. We completely transformed the living room, dining room, kitchen and music room to help Josefina and her family have a bright, open home that they’ll be in for years to come.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

WE WOOD APPROVE

It’s hard to believe, but this space is where the TV was originally hung, due in large part to the fireplace’s giant stone facade. We created a new, slimmer profile for the fireplace and relocated the TV over the new mantle, giving us space to include these beautiful built-ins. Together with the hardwood floors and new furniture, Josefina’s living room combines mid-century modern design with 21st-century amenities.

A QUIET PLACE

Josefina is a professional musician, but she was performing in a room that allowed inside and outside noise to creep in. We completely soundproofed the room to give her a comfortable place to perform and relax when she’s not playing.

INSIDE-OUTSIDE GAME

Sofia had to navigate her way around every piece of furniture, and often couldn’t hang out with other members of the family in the kitchen. We don’t like to see design that puts up walls to people … so we took this one out, and replaced it with a fully collapsible window. Now, the family can seamlessly transition from the lovely new kitchen to Josefina’s outdoor pool and backyard—and Sofia can go wherever she likes.
